Change is inevitable—except from vending machines. For two decades the Journal of Asian Martial Arts has been the leader in Martial Arts education and the journal continues to adapt to the flux in the economy, in advancing technology, and in the publishing field.

Currently the Journal of Asian Martial Arts is making changes within the editorial board, seeking members who are both highly skilled in combatives and have a solid scholarly foundation of the martial traditions. A key catalyst for the journal will be their desire to help solicit manuscripts for possible publication in our periodical. A little effort on their part can result in improving the journal overall.

As the first change to the editorial board in some time, The Journal of Asian Martial Arts would like to heartfully welcome an individual very skilled in close quarter combat, Dr. Rhadi Ferguson, to the editorial board as an Associate Editor.

Elsevier Australia Releases Gillian Rozenberg?s Cases in Microscopic Haematology

Elsevier Australia Releases Gillian Rozenberg’s Cases in Microscopic Haematology

Sydney, NSW (PRWEB) November 29, 2011

Elsevier Australia (http://www.elsevierhealth.com.au) has published a new local textbook from esteemed Sydney Senior Medical Scientist and author of ‘Microscopic Haematology’, Gillian Rozenberg.

As well as being an indispensible tool for practicing clinicians, the new ‘Cases in Microscopic Haematology’ is a must-have for the haematologists, pathologists and medical scientists of tomorrow.

This high-quality haematology textbook comprises a collection of 80 microscopic haematology case studies specifically designed to engage readers in the laboratory process of data and blood film analysis, differential diagnosis and reporting.

A key feature of the ‘Cases in Microscopic Haematology’ is its inclusion of rare blood film/slides – including paediatric slides – that are not easily available elsewhere.

Rozenberg has included the family history, analyser data and blood film/slide for each of the 80 cases contained in the book. Students are able to work through the cases using a template to complete the differential diagnosis and reporting. Both the process and template simulate a functioning laboratory environment.

Case studies are organised according to difficulty and – most importantly for some – the worked cases are available in the back of the textbook.

Rozenberg’s previous book, ‘Microscopic Haematology: A Practical Guide for the Laboratory’, is now in its third edition. Microscopic Haematology is an excellent companion title for ‘Cases in Microscopic Haematology’, whether purchased separately or as a package.

Elsevier’s Evolve platform features a range of resources for instructors. This includes all the book’s images in an easy-to-use image collection and 20 annotated virtual slides comprising case studies from ‘Cases in Microscopic Haematology’.

New York Law School Announces New Joint Degree Program in Forensic Psychology and Law

New York Law School Announces New Joint Degree Program in Forensic Psychology and Law

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 28, 2011

New York Law School (NYLS) and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, announced today the creation of a dual-degree M.A.-J.D. program in forensic psychology and law to train attorneys with a specialization in mental disability law. The program will begin in the fall 2012 semester.

The new dual degree brings together two fully-developed programs at each institution: the J.D. at NYLS and the M.A. in forensic psychology at John Jay. J.D. students at NYLS have the opportunity to specialize in mental disability law, through course offerings that represent the most comprehensive mental disability law curriculum of any law school in the world, while John Jay’s M.A. program in forensic psychology specializes in psychology as it relates to law and the courts. John Jay’s psychology department includes more than 35 full-time faculty members who specialize in forensic areas, including six professors who are both attorneys and psychologists.

“This new program is a perfect fit between our two institutions, as it combines the strongest law program specializing in mental disability law in the country, with the strongest forensic psychology program in the country,” said Dr. James S. Wulach, Director of the M.A. Program in Forensic Mental Health Counseling at John Jay. “Our graduates will be well-trained lawyers for people with mental disability issues and have the potential to become legal advocates, work on public policy, or become law professors in this unique niche.”

The 128-credit program allows students to count 12 law school credits towards their M.A. degree and 12 M.A. credits towards their law degree, allowing them to graduate with both degrees in four years instead of five. Required courses include Survey of Mental Disability Law; Mental Health Professionals, Social Science, and the Law; Criminal Psychological Assessment; Criminal Law; and Legal Practice. Electives include such courses as Mental Disability and Criminal Law; Race, Gender, Class, and Mental Disability; Forensic Reports, the Role of Experts, and Forensic Ethics; and Custody Evaluations, Juvenile & Family Law, and Mental Disability.

“I’m very excited about the joint program because it highlights the interdisciplinary nature of what we are trying to do through our Mental Disability Law Program [MDL],” said Professor Michael L. Perlin, the MDL program’s Director. “We created our courses very specifically to appeal to both lawyers and mental health professionals. This program helps create a synergy that ensures, as best as we can, that graduates will have a deep understanding of the other’s discipline.”

To be admitted into the dual-degree program, students should apply separately and be accepted into both NYLS and John Jay. Students will have the option of beginning their first year in either of the two degree programs.

For more information about the dual-degree M.A.-J.D. program, click here.

In addition to the new dual-degree program, NYLS, through its Mental Disability Law Program, also offers an online Masters of Arts in Mental Disability Law Studies and a Certificate in Advanced Mental Disability Law Studies, the only degree and certificate of their kind to be offered by an American Bar Association-approved law school. Current TV and Fox to Air Interviews with Discovery Channel?s ?Weed Wars? Stars Tonight

Current TV and Fox to Air Interviews with Discovery Channel’s “Weed Wars” Stars Tonight

Steve DeAngelo

Oakland, CA (PRWEB) November 28, 2011

In anticipation of a huge audience response to the premiere of Discovery Channel’s “Weed Wars” on Thursday, December 1, both Current TV and Fox News’ highest rated show, The O’Reilly Factor, will air interviews tonight with the stars of the reality series: Steve DeAngelo, Executive Director of Harborside Health Center, and Andrew DeAngelo, Harborside’s General Manager.

“The War on Weed” will air on Current TV’s no-limits documentary series Vanguard at 6 pm (PST). Current TV takes a look at the battle being fought between entrepreneurs and federal agents in California’s state-legalized medical cannabis industry.

The O’Reilly Factor interview will air on Fox News at 8 pm (PST). Bill O’Reilly is known for hosting a rigidly enforced “No Spin Zone” in a straightforward and provocative manner. He invites guests with opposing viewpoints to comment on current day news and issues.

Discovery Channel’s “Weed Wars” focuses on Oakland’s Harborside Health Center—the nation’s largest medicil cannabis dispensary, serving over 94,000 patients—and the leadership behind Harborside—activist, founder and Executive Director Steve DeAngelo. DeAngelo’s lifelong mission has been to bring the truth about the cannabis plant to the American public.

The series takes viewers on an up-close-and-personal exploration of the hot-button issue of medical cannabis, following the DeAngelo family and Harborside’s staff as they fearlessly wrestle with the complex issues they face every day. The series accurately captures the real life drama and high stakes of the business as federal agencies make increasingly harsher threats and IRS audits attempt to shut down the Oakland cannabis dispensary.

In addition to focusing on Steve DeAngelo, his family and the staff, “Weed Wars” follows the journey of the plant itself from seed germination to harvesting. Audiences will meet the growers and “patient farmers” whose job it is to provide the “medicine” that will be eventually purchased and used by thousands of clients, many of whom feel their lives have been forever changed by the plant.

About Harborside Health Center:

Founded by national cannabis leader Steve DeAngelo in 2005, Harborside Health Center is the nation’s largest not-for-profit model medical cannabis dispensary. The Oakland medical cannabis collective offers its 94,000 registered patients free holistic health services, lab-tested medicine and education.

“Out of the shadows and in to the light” epitomizes DeAngelo’s mission to enlighten the public on the many medicinal and therapeutic benefits of the plant. DeAngelo is recognized as a national leader and strategist of the cannabis reform movement. He speaks and writes widely on the subject. DeAngelo will be featured in “Weed Wars” on The Discovery Channel this fall.

R.D. Olson Development and Wynmark Company Break Ground on Courtyard by Marriott in Goleta — a Turn of Events in the Hotel?s Brand

R.D. Olson Development and Wynmark Company Break Ground on Courtyard by Marriott in Goleta — a Turn of Events in the Hotel’s Brand

Robert Olson, CEO/president, R.D. Olson Development

Irvine, Calif. (PRWEB) November 16, 2011

The joint venture team of R.D. Olson Development and Wynmark Company announced that what was once slated to be named the Camino Real Hotel, an independent hotel in Goleta, Calif., will open as the Courtyard by Marriott. This will be the first Marriott to be built in Goleta. The announcement was made at its recent groundbreaking at which the new hotel owners were joined by Goleta Mayor Margaret Connell and other city officials. The hotel is located at 401 Storke Rd.

“We choose the Marriott brand because we consider it to be best in the business, given it offers the industry’s most popular travel rewards program and has a following of customers,” said Robert Olson, CEO, R.D. Olson Development.

The Courtyard by Marriott is ideally situated one mile from the University of California, Santa Barbara; Santa Barbara Airport; Camino Real Marketplace; and Pacific Ocean. It sits upon 3.02 acres of prime real estate southwest of the Goleta Technology Park. Here, some of the country’s largest industrial and high-tech corporations are based–80 of which are research and development.

“The prospect of a new hotel being built to house visitors of students, faculty and nearby businesses is receiving a warm welcome,” said Olson.

The Courtyard by Marriott in Goleta is a million venture designed to bode well with the community. It will showcase local photographic art depicting the city, which reflects the local culture and history. The Mediterranean-style 68,000 square foot hotel will feature 106 rooms, including nine suites that will have two separate rooms. Fifty percent of these will have double queen beds to accommodate families visiting students and faculty of University of California, Santa Barbara. Each guest room will have Internet access via WiFi, flat-screen televisions, microwave ovens and efficient workspace where guests may conduct business. As a welcomed bonus for Goleta’s growing business community, the hotel will include 1,300 square feet of meeting space. The hotel’s restaurant, The Bistro, was smartly designed to afford guests a choice in food and service style, from grab-n-go to quick service dining for its guests. Guests will enjoy numerous restaurants at the Camino Real Marketplace shopping center next door to the new hotel.

The Courtyard by Marriott lobby will fuse high-tech, high style and maximum functionality. It is designed to generate a connection with guests, with welcome pedestals replacing the front desk for a more inviting, warm reception. An innovative and interactive GoBoard will display news, weather, traffic, local restaurants and documents, while semi-enclosed media pods featuring individually controlled flat-panel televisions will offer a place to work, meet or relax.

An outdoor terrace is planned to extend from the lobby. Here, a welcoming fire pit will lend itself to social gatherings and conversation. The hotel also will feature such resort-style amenities as a fitness room, large outdoor pool, putting green and spa.

Lee and Sakahara Architects of Irvine, Calif. is credited for the architectural design and Kling/Barta Design, LLC of Shawnee Mission, Kansas for its interior.

R.D. Olson Construction, also founded by Robert Olson, was awarded the contract to build the Courtyard by Marriott in Goleta. The construction company recently wrapped up work on the Courtyard by Marriott in Oceanside—another R.D. Olson Development endeavor that opened November 9.

New York Debt Resolution Attorney Leslie H. Tayne Details How Family Caregivers Can Manage Debt

New York Debt Resolution Attorney Leslie H. Tayne Details How Family Caregivers Can Manage Debt

(PRWEB) November 28, 2011

For many Americans, living with debt is a way of life. This unfortunate reality has grown into an even sadder truth in recent years as more and more are caught in the vicious cycle of being unable to pay their debt due to the weak economy. While the elderly have been particularly hard hit, their caregivers have as well. Even so, the fear, anxiety and financial insecurity associated with debt can be resolved. November is National Family Caregivers Month – the perfect time for caregivers to take hold of their financial situation and begin the process of becoming debt free.

According to a 2009 survey published by the National Alliance for Caregiving, 43 percent of those who reported spending more on caregiving expenses due to the economic downturn also borrowed money or increased their credit card debt as a result. When considering the New York State Office for the Aging’s 2008 statistic that reveled 65 percent of the caregivers surveyed earned ,000 or less per year, it’s easy to understand why many are incurring more unsecured debt.

Although getting out of debt can seem overwhelming, especially once you’re in the midst of it, there are a number of simple things you can do to get on the right path.

Be Aware of Spending

The loss of wages, health insurance, retirement savings and other job benefits caregivers often struggle with can be an extreme hardship. This makes being aware of your spending habits all the more important. As an exercise, write down everything you spend money on for 30 days – a cup of coffee, regular household bills, caregiving expenses – include it all. The amount you actually spend is often much higher than what you anticipated. Once the month-long record is complete, analyze your spending and look for ways to cut expenses. Often just by writing down your spending habits for 30 days, you become more aware and are better able to curb your urge to spend unnecessarily.

Monitor Your Credit

Be aware of your FICO score and the things that affect your score. This includes late payments, carrying a balance within 10% of your credit card limit and going over your credit limit. The more aware you are of your FICO score, the less likely you will be to open new credit and spend when you can’t afford to do so.

Less Is More

The fewer credit cards you have the better. Multiple cards do not help keep spending down and the added complexity is especially unnecessary when you’re handling finances for more people. Although each bill may seem low, when you add them up it is often much larger than you realize. In addition, be aware of the alluring nature of store credit cards. They offer initial discounts, but the interest rates on those cards can be the highest allowed by the law.

Stay Organized

Caregivers must continually juggle their own personal, family and work responsibilities with caring for an elderly loved one. Expenses can quickly add up as you’re pulled in different directions. The key to not letting things go is to make sure that you are aware of when your bills are due. Get a large desk calendar and write down all due dates and also when you’ve spent money. Doing so will help you avoid late fees and keep track of your spending habits.

Get Help

Fifty-three percent of caregivers responding to the New York State Office for the Aging’s 2008 survey reported an added financial burden as a result of their role. It’s important to seek out professionals to assist you before you get into a situation you can’t get out of. Outside help is always available if your debt becomes uncontrollable to manage yourself.

Talk to accountants and lawyers and find a certified professional to assist you not only to get out of debt, but also to make good long-term decisions. Do your due diligence and meet with any professionals face-to-face. There are also a number of organizations, such as the National Family Caregivers Association, that provide resources and support. It’s never too late to live a debt-free lifestyle.

Leslie H. Tayne, founder of The Law Offices of Leslie H. Tayne, P.C., assists consumers and individuals with the resolution of their unsecured debts. The firm’s flexible and well established policies and procedures have helped thousands of individuals lead a debt-free life. SDL Online Shopping and Debby’s Candle Boutique Announce Grand Opening

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (PRWEB) November 16, 2011

Founder of SDL Enterprises, LLC, Steve Lafleur, is pleased to debut two new online endeavors, http://www.SDLOnlineShopping.com and http://www.DebbysCandles.com. Customers are invited to browse through the new Internet storefronts for all of their household, office, and outdoor athletic needs.

“I understand that a customer’s time is valuable,” said Lafleur. “Personally, I hate driving from store to store, not finding what I want, and wasting my time, money, and patience in the process. That’s why I created an easy to navigate online mall where customers can find exactly what they want, compare prices, and have the items delivered right to their door.”

At SDLOnlineShopping.com customers can stock up on home essentials. Select stainless steel cookware to whip up delicious meals to be later served on hand painted dinnerware by Angel Fish Design. Furnish rooms with affordable, durable honey maple furniture and create cozy outdoor conversation pits with benches and hammocks.

Instead of competing for a parking spot at the mall this holiday season, stay home and browse SDLOnlineShopping.com. Purchase ball caps, jerseys, and other fan gear for sports enthusiasts. Select apparel, beauty, and fragrances for her, and hunting, Airsoft and automotive tools for him. The latest consumer electronics, books, music and movies are sure to be a big hit with teenagers. The online shopping mall even has KONG toys for pets!

Visit DebbysCandles.com for unique, fragrant candle holders. Fill a room with aromas like apple pie, blueberry muffin, and orange spice. Mood-setting flameless candles and tealight candles are also popular choices. Complement existing décor by incorporating ornate candle holders like the Red Tulip candle stem or Lookout Lighthouse candle lamp.

Customer satisfaction is a top priority of SDL Enterprises. All products are guaranteed to meet our customer’s high expectations regarding quality, aesthetics, and affordability. Orders are filled and shipped promptly. Feedback is always welcome and responded to in a timely manner by friendly, knowledgeable staff members.
